Beech Grove woman gets ‘gift’ from late husband: a puppy

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) When it’s unexpected, the loss of a loved one can be especially difficult.

A woman in Beech Grove is dealing with tremendous loss after the death of her husband of nearly 30 years.

But, she said she believes he sent her one last gift to help her ease the pain.

Kandi and Keith ‘Preacher’ Norman were married for 28 years. Keith died unexpectedly Sunday and left his wife searching for answers.

I’m lost, empty. I’m sad and angry. Everything, said Kandi Norman.

But sometimes, when you’re desperately searching for an answer, that answer finds you.

On Thursday, Kandi was leaving the funeral home in Beech Grove.

She was driving down Hanna Avenue, when she saw a puppy tossed from a moving white minivan.

I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know how someone could do that to a puppy, said Kandi Norman.

Dodging oncoming traffic, Kandi and her daughter jumped out of their car and saved the puppy.

She had poop and pee on her and she was malnourished. It was awful, said Kandi Norman.

Hanna Avenue proved to be an unforgiving road that came with a silver lining.

It’s a road where’s she’ll say goodbye to her husband, but hello to something else.

It’s like a grace from God, so we call her ‘Gracie,’ said Kristian Norman, Kandi’s son.

Gracie the pit bull puppy mix has her forever home staying with Kandi’s son, Kristian.

Gracie’s new grandma said she believes it’s a sign.

Everybody said that maybe my husband sent her. So, we are keeping her, said Kandi Norman.

They say a dog is man’s best friend. Kandi said she believes her husband may have sent her hers.

I really felt so sorry for her. Like because she was hurting so bad. But It was just a different hurt than what I hurt, said Kandi Norman.

If you know who could have thrown the puppy out of the white minivan, call Beech Grove Police Department at 317-782-4949 or Indianapolis Animal Control Service at 317-327-1397.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with funeral expenses.
