CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Carmel’s mayor says New York City is going be getting a hand in the fight against COVID-19.

Mayor Jim Brainard says he is working alongside Apex Medical, Zak Khan and Aria Diagnostics to send 50,000 test kits to New York. Apex Medical is based in Carmel.

Apex Medical is able to make about 12,000 kits a day and has enough materials to make between 250,000 and 500,000 kits.

Those involved say this won’t impact local testing.

“We must be able to look back on this moment in time and know that we did all we could to help fight the battle against this historic and deadly virus,” Brainard said in a statement. “Countries that have tested widely have seen more success with leveling the curve and reducing number of people catching the virus because they are able to quarantine those who test positive. They are able to determine if the virus exists in someone even though they may not be symptomatic before testing.”

The kits will be ready in about two weeks.
