Controversial bunny mural removed from Indianapolis restaurant

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A mural depicting two rabbits engaged in intercourse, one with a cigarette hanging from its mouth, spanned a wall of fine dining spot Beholder for just two days before the building’s landlord had it painted over, frustrating the restaurant’s owners.

The artist who painted the mural earlier this week, on the wall facing East 10th Street near the Woodruff Place neighborhood, was passing through Indianapolis from California on her way to New York, according to Joshua Mazanowski, who co-owns Beholder with Jonathan Brooks.

Mazanowski said the artist is known for her drawings of rabbits.

A man painted over the mural on Friday morning, also removing a skull that the artist had painted around the corner from the rabbits.

Some nearby residents said they thought the mural was inappropriate.

“I was a little shocked, and I thought, ‘Why?’ We have a school here. A lot of kids walk, and I just imagine the kids over here sharing this on Instagram,” said Angie Sanchez, who lives nearby.

“We certainly want to support the creative spirit of Indianapolis whether it’s through art, whether it’s through food, whether it’s through sports,” said Mazanowski.

Mazanowski said the restaurant is looking into making that wall a community space for art.
