Department of Workforce Development to begin Lost Wages Assistance payments to cover 6-week period

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — New help for those who are unemployed from Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is set to start. They will begin making Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) payments to those eligible, to cover a six-week period.

The new payments were announced on Sept.11. The department hasn’t said how many people or how much money is projected to be spent on payments.

The LWA funding will cover the six-week period from the week ending Aug. 1. to the week ending Sept. 5. No LWA funding will be available for dates beyond that time period.

For those with issues holding a payment, DWD will make payments, pending funding availability, once eligibility is established.

The LWA is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide $3,000 per week to supplement unemployment benefits for those who have an unemployment benefit amount of at least $100 and are out of work due to COVID-19.

Since March 8, DWD has paid a total of $4.9 billion to nearly 670,000 Hoosiers.
