Donnelly: EPA needs to take over toxins investigation in Franklin

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana is calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to take over the investigation and the cleanup of contamination in Johnson County.

This call came after the EPA found cancer-causing toxins in and around a long-closed industrial site in Franklin. People who live in the area say they are concerned that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the city of Franklin aren’t doing enough and aren’t being transparent.

The Democrat senator said enough is enough and the EPA needs to step in.

“That way we can have one agency in charge handling this who can coordinate everything, who can be a point of reference for everyone to come talk to, to help solve this incredibly heartbreaking problem.”

Tests are being conducted on 30 homes that could be affected by the toxins. No word yet on when those tests will be completed.
