Driver dies after emergency workers pull him from pond

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say two sheriff’s deputies and a firefighter were taken to a hospital after they helped pull a driver from a vehicle that crashed into a central Indiana pond.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department says the driver died at an Indianapolis hospital several hours following the crash soon after midnight Sunday along Indiana 37 a few miles north of Martinsville.

The department says the deputies and firefighter were taken to a hospital as a precaution against hypothermia. They were all treated and released.

Those three and a bystander jumped into the retention pond and rescue the driver. The department says investigators believe the vehicle was northbound on Indiana 37 when it went across the highway and into the retention pond.
