Fort Wayne, West Lafayette police get body camera grants

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) – The Fort Wayne and West Lafayette police departments are receiving federal grants to purchase body cameras for officers.

The Justice Department announced $23 million in grants to 73 law enforcement agencies nationwide Monday. They include $126,585 to the Fort Wayne Police Department and $12,166 to the West Lafayette Police Department. Those were the only Indiana agencies to receive grants.

The grants require a 50/50 in-kind or cash match by the agencies and require them to establish a strong implementation plan and a robust training policy before purchasing cameras. Each agency also is responsible for developing a plan for long-term storage.
