Free Indianapolis performing arts program to keep kids out of trouble

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A performing arts company is offering a 12-week free program to keep kids encouraged and out of trouble.

Toe 2 Toe Performing Arts Company has more than two dozen kids between ages 4-17 attending the program since July.

They’re currently working on a production that discusses positivity and self-confidence. Toe 2 Toe Performing Arts Company is teaching children genres of dance like tap, ballet and hip hop. Kids are learning about performing arts history, music, poetry, spoken word, comedy, theatre and improv.

Founder of the company Latoya Dawson told News 8 the free program was created to expose performing arts to the urban community and to keep kids away from distractions on the internet.

“Giving them the opportunity to have something positive to do versus being what comes with today’s society, unfortunately,” said Dawson. “If they don’t have the reason or even the free time to actually engage into any negative activities because they’re here with me engaging in positive activities.”

Toe 2 Toe Performance Arts Company is also offering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs to kids and virtual learning help during the week.

The program is raising money to put on a Broadway production in October. Proceeds will go towards renting a venue, costumes and props.
