Governor Holcomb honors Hoosier Sikhs with historic proclamation

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Earlier this month, leaders in the Sikh community joined local officials at the Indiana Statehouse.

Together, they recognized April as a time for Sikhs to spread awareness about their faith, culture and traditions.

For some Sikh leaders behind the proclamation, it’s been years in the making.

They say, 50 years ago there were one or two Sikh families in Indiana. Now they say the Hoosier Sikh community is around 2,500 families.

News 8 spoke with longtime Indianapolis resident and interfaith leader K.P. Singh who says elected officials along the way have helped move the needle regarding acceptance.

They’ve also endured inequity based on their articles of faith.

Still, Singh says it’s not up to just one group of people to create change.

“Whether he’s a Sikh or not. Be part of the community where you live. And be good, loyal, trusted partner,” said Singh.

This is the third year the governor of Indiana has proclaimed April “National Sikh Heritage Month”

For Sikhs, this year is especially meaningful. They are celebrating the 550th birth of the founder of the Sikh religion.

The Sikh Satsang of Indianapolis serves snacks, tea and a vegetarian lunch every Sunday.

All are welcome, but guests should be prepared to cover their head upon entering the Temple. Bandanas are provided at the front entrance.
