Help available for working parents during remote learning in Marion County
MARION COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Parents are looking at options available for those who have to work while balancing their kids are e-learning at home.
Community learning sites for students that offer remote learning are free for families.
The Reset Center has been chosen by The Mind Trust, a foundation that helps families with remote learning access.
Staff members at The Reset Center said they’re expecting dozens of students from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), and Lawrence Township and Wayne Township school districts.
The Mind Trust wants to make sure a learning site is easily accessible to black and brown communities.
Mother Joan Jones who has six children tells News 8, “Times are so bad that I don’t leave my children at home. So for them to be able to go to a site and get the help that they need and it’s free of charge and it’s supervised is amazing.”
Some other parents are choosing home schooling. Freedom Fighters Academics (FAA) on the east side is assisting students from ages 3-14. Ana Beverly, the founder and the only teacher at FFA, said she home schools six children. “It’s better for the kids to work at their own pace instead of them being in the classroom or 15-20 students who all have to be on the same level and putting that pressure on them to beat this level or be behind,” Beverly said.
The Freedom Fighters Academics founder also said many parents have been inquiring about the service since the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s making the parents kind of panic as far as what they need to do with their kids and kind of freaking out,” Beverly said. “The kids, too, like ‘Oh, we want to go to school, but I don’t want to catch this virus.’”
Freedom Fighters Academics plans to offer transportation soon.
