INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Some people were brave enough to bear the cold and jump into freezing water Saturday morning at Butler University’s Polar Plunge to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics.

More than 300 were at an outdoor pool at Butler’s Health and Recreation Complex.

The Special Olympics hopes to raise more than $900,000 statewide this year.

“Some of our local athletes are raising money themselves and local teams that will help pay for uniforms, transportation, meals,” said Jeff Mohler, President and CEO of Special Olympics Indiana. “We will also use that money to put on state championship events.

There are three more events over the next two weekends:

• Greenwood Polar Plunge, Feb. 29 at Dye’s Walk Country Club
• High School Polar Plunge, March 6 at Eagle Creek Park
• Indianapolis Polar Plunge, March 7 at Eagle Creek Park
