IMPD: 1 killed, 5 hurt in crash on near-northeast side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person has died and five others were injured following a crash in the near-northeast side of Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The crash involving an SUV and a van happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday south of the fairgrounds in the area of East 34th Street and Sutherland Avenue.

Police said the SUV was traveling northbound when it collided with the van. Two passengers in the SUV were ejected from the vehicle. One of the occupants of the SUV died. Police at the scene said five others were taken to a nearby hospital with serious and critical injuries. 

Parts of Sutherland Avenue were closed while authorities investigated the crash. 

No other details have been released.
