IMPD: Man took car with child inside, led officers on chase

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — When police tried to arrest a man on the city’s west side, he jumped in a car with a child in the backseat and drove off. The chase would span roughly 10 miles and cross city limits before it ended in a crash.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to apartments near 30th Street and Keystone Avenue around 6 p.m. Sunday on a “violent domestic” call with a man and a woman involved.

When officers tried to arrest the man, who is wanted on a warrant out of Allen County, the man took off in a silver car with a child in the backseat, Capt. Robert Troutt said at the scene. The man led police on a chase across parts of interstates 65 and 70, as well as surface streets, crashing into a sport-utility vehicle at the intersection of 10th Street and Main Street in Speedway.

Police initiated a pit maneuver three times to end the chase, but the suspect evaded the first two tries. The third try ended in the crash into the SUV. The driver of the SUV was not injured, Troutt said.

Police said the child, who was taken to IU Health Riley Children’s Hospital to be checked out, was not related to the woman involved in the domestic call but was likely related to the suspect.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. Troutt said the car did not appear to have damage significant enough to account for the man’s injuries.

Police did not identify the suspect or name the possible charges he could face.
