INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — Indiana breweries brought home a lot of hardware from the 2020 Great American Beer Festival, including the Most Medaled Brewery award.

Indianapolis-based Sun King Brewery received the accolade after receiving four medals, the most among the 1,720 breweries in the competition.

Sun King received one gold and three bronze medals from a total of 272 medals awarded.

Whitestown-based Moontown Brewing Co. earned two medals, while Taxman Brewing Co. in Bargersville and Flix Brewhouse in Carmel both received one medal at the beer festival.

Judges for the GABF competition evaluated 8,806 entries from all 50 states, having implemented social distancing rules to keep judges safe.

“This has arguably been one of the most challenging years breweries have ever faced, so we hope these awards serve as a symbol not only of brewing excellence but also the resiliency of the craft brewing community as a whole,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival.

Metazoa Brewing Co. in Indianapolis was also a big winner at the GABF, receiving two bronze medals. It also earned honors from the 2020 Alpha King Challenge, where it placed third overall.

“Our entire brewing team is extremely honored to be recognized in both the GABF and Alpha King Challenge competitions this year,” said Nick Betzner, director of brewing operations at Metazoa Brewing Co. “For our small brewing team—and for myself especially—being a top-three winner at the Alpha King Challenge is a true bucket-list accomplishment for us. We are incredibly excited to continue to grow as a brewery and make delicious, innovative, and award-winning beers for years to come.”
