INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett has announced a series of efforts aimed at improving safety and aiding recovery efforts downtown.

Hogsett says $750,000 in TIF-backed funding will be used.

Plans include:

  • More than 150 street-level cameras, which will added to an existing Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department program
  • Mobile cameras in “crime hot spots”
  • Off-duty IMPD officers performing increased bike/foot patrols
  • A Safety Ambassador program employing IMPD cadets and civilians

“This investment will mean a bolstered public safety infrastructure day and night for downtown,” Hogsett said in a statement.. “It will mean an increased investment in non-public safety personnel to serve as wayfinders and ambassadors. It means new technology capabilities to help our local law enforcement officers better access and respond in real time to illegal activity. And it comes in the form of more cleaning capacity for common areas; more homeless outreach for effective and people-first solutions.”
