IndyGo to ramp up work on Red Line bus transit project

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The city’s IndyGo bus service said Tuesday it will ramp up construction on its Red Line bus transit project.

The cost: $3.5 million. But, IndyGo said it was money already built into the $96 million project. The added spending is expected to cut four months off the construction schedule.

Starting Monday, IndyGo said, about 15 extra construction crews will work at the same time along the 13-mile stretch of work from Broad Ripple to Downtown Indianapolis. Crews also be working more on weekends and at night.

The increase will restrict some parking on College Avenue from 38th to 66th streets. That will start Monday as well.

IndyGo said some delays have occurred in the project because crews had to relocate utilities. That pushed back the opening of the Red Line until the end of 2019.

Organizers hope the acceleration will mean construction can now wrap up this summer.
