IUPUI police crack down on speed limit change

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Campus police at IUPUI are cracking down on speeding drivers after speed limits on the IUPUI campus were reduced from 35 mph to 25 mph.

The change is part of the “Busy Campus, Busy Streets” campaign, which focuses on drivers, pedestrians and cyclists sharing the road.

Every day, more than 28,000 cars travel on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus, and 38,000 students and employees cross roads.

In January, the Indianapolis City-County Council approved a proposal to lower speed limits in the mile square district of downtown Indianapolis, which includes the campus.

“We have 25-mile speed zones for students. and I don’t see why it should be any different,” IUPUI employee Tammy Barnes said. “This is a school, so it should be the same.”

Officers will provide a flyer to drivers who are pulled over to indicate the speed limit change, but there is a potential of a $150 ticket.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works on Thursday was still working to change all of the speed limit signs across campus.
