Man caught on camera stealing Indy kids’ letters to great-grandfather

Video shows letters from great-grandkids stolen from Indianapolis mailbox

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis family is looking for answers after mail to their faraway loved ones was stolen from their downtown home and it was all caught on camera.

A man opened the mailbox, took what was inside and walked off. What he didn’t know is he stole letters meant for someone special.

Chad Ahren lives in the Herron-Morton neighborhood with his two daughters, Avery and Lorelei.

His daughters made cards for their 98-year-old great-grandfather who lives in Illinois. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the girls have not been able to see him.

Those letters were among the mail taken by a man captured on doorbell video.

“If it were something that was irreplaceable, that would’ve been awful. But my daughters are excellent artists and they have a lot of love to give,” Chad said.

“I really miss him (her great-grandfather) and I hope to see him as soon as we can and I hope he’s not too bored and lonely,” said Avery.

Chad says his daughters have already made new letters to mail off.

No arrests have been made.
