Marion County expands rental assistance program

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County residents who need help paying rent can now apply for more assistance.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett says the IndyRent program is now accepting applications for up to 12 months of assistance. The previous limit was three months.

Several factors must be met to be eligible:

  • Household must be at or below 80% of the area median income.
  • Must have experienced a reduction in earned income due to COVID-19.
  • Must be at risk of housing instability.

“We’re proud to continue to extend a lifeline to residents still feeling the economic impact of the pandemic,” Hogsett said in a statement. “This extension provides an opportunity to families across Indianapolis to regain economic stability and more equitably experience prosperity.”

The city has issued flyers with recommendations for landlords and tenants. An FAQ is available here. These documents are also available in Spanish.

The money was made available after the City-Count Council approved the $91 million allocation from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority in September.

The program has distributed more than $70 million since July 2020.
