North split construction begins Monday as part of $320 million plan

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A major project to redesign the north split starts Monday night and could take nearly two years to complete.

Drivers will see movement on the $320-million this week, including overnight lane closures along the left and right shoulders of I-65 from near the 21st Street exit (through the North Split, and along I-70 near Emerson Avenue) to the North Split.

Work is expected along both the highway and ramp shoulders for installation of signage and traffic control measures, but the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) says traffic shouldn’t be impacted too much as lanes will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Dec. 14 – 19.

Crews will also be doing temporary pavement work along the inside left shoulder of the I-65/I-70 southbound exit ramp to Michigan Street so drivers can expect overnight closures from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Additional overnight closures will be in place next week along I-70 eastbound between Rural Street and Keystone Avenue on Monday and Tuesday while crews demolish the existing barrier wall to place temporary pavement for a future traffic shift.

More closures are expected next year in January as construction on the redesign continues.

In the meantime, INDOT encourages drivers to slow down, use caution and avoid driving with a cell phone through work zones.
