Pecar Park opening Saturday in Avon

AVON, Ind. (WISH) – The Pecar Park’s slogan is “Get lost in the right direction.”

With 46-acres of outdoor facilities in Avon, there will be an activity for the whole family to get off the beaten path.

It’s all part of the township’s Master Plan for 2019.

Every few years, the town sends out a survey on how to best serve the needs of the community.

In the survey from 2015, it was clear residents wanted more nature focused facilities.

Park directors then started making plans for what is now Helen Pecar Memorial Park.

Facilities include a primitive campground, playground, racoon lagoon with kayak rentals, a nature center and a low ropes challenge which will open this fall.

The hope is to get kids interested in learning about animals.

Washington Township Parks Director Lora Helmick said, “Children can learn by more hands on experience. They’ll be able to see the animals. And learn what’s the difference between a tortoise and a turtle. And why can’t they put the tortoise in the water? Why does the turtle need this type of diet?”

Helmick also said that in a time where everyone is on their screens, she sees nothing wrong with kids wanting to get muddy and collect rocks.

Families will be able to start collecting those rocks starting Saturday.

The park is hosting a grand opening event and ribbon cutting ceremony. Guests can meet the animals, play games and tour the grounds.
