Pedestrian dies after struck on I-465 on northwest side

LATEST: The Marion County Coroner’s Office had not responded by July 5, 2022, to a request from News 8 for the identification of the pedestrian.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A pedestrian died Thursday night after being struck in the northbound lanes of I-465 on the northwest side, Indiana State Police said.

Dispatch information said Indiana State Police and emergency medical crews from Pike Township were sent shortly after 7:55 p.m. Thursday to the 18.5-mile marker, which sits between the overpasses for West 46th and 56th streets. The man died on the interstate after paramedics tried to save him, the state police said.

Sgt. John Perrine of the state police told News 8 in an email that it’s too early to determine what happened exactly, but that “it sounds like a person was walking in the middle of the left lane when they were struck.”

A news release later sent by Perrine said, “Another vehicle parked on the shoulder of the highway near the collision is believed to be associated with the deceased man.”

The sergeant did not answer an inquiry from News 8 about whether the death was accidental or intentional, but he said foul play was not suspected. Police continued to investigate at the scene at 10:20 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man was not suspected to be impaired by drugs or alcohol, but that driver did submit to an intoxication text as required by Indiana law.

The man ‘s name was being withheld while his family is notified, state police said. The Marion County Coroner’s Office was at the crash scene.

Wayne Township Fire Department also assisted state police at the crash scene, the release said.
