Public Works resumes pothole fixes, updates strip-patching plan

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The 4900 block of Guion Road is so riddled with potholes that cars are forced come to a compete stop.

The guy who lives in front of this makeshift gravel road is Jeremy Winters. He said he really doesn’t mind the potholes.

“There are a lot of potholes out here, but they actually slows down traffic. People come flying up and down the road here,” Winters said.

Winters is spot on; for northbound traffic on Guion, the drivers who see the holes came to a complete stop. If the oncoming lane was clear, other drivers just went around in the holes in Guion Road, which is a double-yellow line, no passing zone.

“Someone ran into my yard here yesterday, because of oncoming traffic, to miss the potholes. They swerve to miss the cars coming this way,” Winters said.

On Thursday, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett told reporters and a few City-County Council members that Department of Public Works crews have filled thousands of potholes, but everyone needs to be patient. Wintry weather has caused Public Works crews to go back and force from pothole fixes to icy and snow removal in recent weeks.

“We acknowledge that that is a temporary fix trying to get us through the winter,” Hogsett said.

Since Jan. 1, crews have filled more than 57,000 potholes, the city said.

Strip-patching update

The mayor said Public Works strip-patching locations are generated from recommendations made by Public Works leaders by using pavement data to target the most deteriorated streets in the city. The city’s “Street Maintenance Team” and contractors are addressing problem thoroughfares and streets. Strip-patching is part of  this year’s $126 million transportation improvement plan, in which 167 lane miles of Indianapolis streets and bridges are to be resurfaced or improved.

Crews were doing strip-patching segments Thursday at these locations:

  • Southport Road, from Mann Road to Tibbs Avenue
  • German Church Road, from 38th to 42nd streets

Locations to be addressed using the strip-patching technique include:

  • 16th Street, from Lynbrook Drive to Post Road
  • Pennsylvania Street, from 40th to 43rd streets
  • Washington Street, from Arlington Avenue to Kenyon Street
  • 86th Street, from Purdue to Harcourt roads
  • Allisonville Road, from 46th to 47th streets
  • 21st Street, from Senate Boulevard to Meridian Street
