Registration opens Monday for 2016 Mini-Marathon

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Registration for the 2016 One America 500 Festival Mini-Marathon opens Monday. It will be the 40th running.

To kick off registration, the 500 Festival is teaming up with the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders, who will serve as the pacesetters for the 2016 race.

The cheerleaders will run the entire mini marathon course Monday morning beginning at 9 a.m.

Their goal is to finish the 13.1 mile course faster than the average finish time for the Mini-Marathon, which is 2:33. If they do that, the 500 Festival will donate $5,000 to the National Stroke Association. Their pace will also be the pace to beat for the 2016 race.

For each participant who finishes faster than the cheerleaders’ pace, the 500 Festival will donate a dollar to charity, and the Colts will donate a dollar per person to the National Stroke Association.

The cheerleaders are running in honor of a former teammate, Tessa, who suffered a stroke at the age of 28. The team hopes to raise awareness of the warning signs of a stroke, and to show their support for Tessa.

The cheerleaders will run the course beginning at 9 a.m. Monday. You can cheer on the team along the course, or on social media by using the hashtag #fasterthancoltscheer.
