School honors teacher killed in 2012 Indianapolis blast

GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) – A Greenwood school has named its media center for a popular teacher who was killed in a 2012 house explosion.

The Daily Journal reports that Southwest Elementary School held a ceremony Wednesday to dedicate the center to Jennifer Longworth. The second-grade teacher and her husband, Dion, died in November 2012 when an explosion rocked the Richmond Hill subdivision in Indianapolis.

Three people have been charged in the blast. Prosecutors contend Monserrate Shirley, Mark Leonard and his brother, Bob Leonard, plotted to blow up Shirley’s home next door to the Longworths’ to collect insurance money.

Longworth taught at the school for 12 years and was known for knitting scarves and hats for her students each winter.

The ceremony occurred the day before what would have been her 39th birthday.
