School safety: 20 years after Columbine shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Saturday marks 20 years since the deadly school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.

On Thursday, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick stopped by Daybreak.

McCormick talked about what she remembered feeling at the time of the deadly shooting. McCormick, who at the time was a teacher, said it was a rude awakening of mass murder taking place in the classroom.

She also talked about the Indiana School Safety Academy, which provides training and best practices as to how to handle such situations.

McCormick also discussed mental, social and emotional health and the importance of addressing those situations as a preventative measure.
