Sears in Greenwood, Kmart in Indianapolis will close

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, Sears Holding Company has announced that it will close its Sears store at the Greenwood Park Mall, as well the Kmart on West Washington Street in Indianapolis, according to our newsgathering partners at WIBC.

Sears was one of the first anchor stores at the Greenwood Park Mall when it opened in 1965 and is among the 142 “unprofitable” Sears stores closing across the end of 2018.

A Sears in Terre Haute, a Kmart in Jasper and a Kmart in Griffith will also close.

In September, the company closed 46 locations, including the Sears stores in Castleton, Muncie and Lafayette.

The company that owns the retail brands has lost $11 billion over the past 10 years, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Sears was founded in 1886. The company that founded Kmart started in 1899, but the first retail store named Kmart opened in 1962.

In 2005, Sears merged with Kmart to become Sears Holding Company.
