INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Central Indiana is still feeling the effects of the snow dumped this past weekend, with slick roads and black ice.

Hundreds of accidents were reported over the weekend, and there have been more accidents since the start of the week even though we haven’t had any more snow.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said temperatures going above freezing during the day and then dropping well below at night have kept the crashes coming.

“That’s why our drivers have maintained a presence even though it’s not snowing. They continue to be out patrolling, salting, treating roads as needed to help prevent as many of those slick spots as we can,” said Scott Manning, a spokesman for INDOT.

The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office sent out an alert Tuesday morning recommending drivers stay off roads unless absolutely necessary. Later in the afternoon, another update said the conditions had improved dramatically.

INDOT said its crews have been on the roads salting pretty much nonstop. Problem spots could be on bridges or near bridges. However, INDOT said when there isn’t snow falling, the salt can get blown away by wind or by cars driving, limiting its effectiveness. That’s why INDOT crews have been out constantly since the weekend snow, Manning said.

Indianapolis Department of Public Works said it will have crews treating roads Tuesday evening in anticipation of possible freezing rain on Wednesday.
