Special Olympics Polar Plunge hopes to raise $1 million
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The cold temperatures Saturday didn’t stop some brave people from taking a plunge into frigid water to raise money for the Special Olympics.
Special Olympics Indiana hosted a Polar Plunge at Butler University — it’s the group’s signature fundraiser.
One of the plunge participants talked about how the cold water felt Saturday morning.
“It’s kinda like elation. It’s not terrible like a lot of people might think it is — it’s very cold. But it kinda just wakes up the soul,” said Sgt. Loran Wilber with Butler University Police Department.
Last year, the Special Olympics raised $800,000 across Indiana. This year’s goal is $1 million.
Two more plunges near Indianapolis are coming up soon: Feb. 23 in Greenwood and March 2 at Eagle Creek Park. To participate, individuals must raise at least $75. Students with valid IDs can participate after raising $50.
All funds raised will directly benefit current and future Special Olympics athletes, according to Special Olympics Indiana.
