Town of Brownsburg to help those in need with annual ‘Let’s Give Food Drive’

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WISH) – The Town of Brownsburg is beginning its annual Let’s Give Food Drive on Nov. 1 through the 24.

It’s a community effort to help feed families in need ahead of the holiday season.

Donations will be delivered to the food pantry at Messiah Lutheran Church, a staple in the community.

The food pantry has been open every Saturday from 10 a.m to noon for the last 20 years.

It serves more than 2,000 families, primarily in Hendricks County.

The congregation at Messiah Lutheran Church donates money to the pantry so it can provide fresh produce, eggs and meat.

Therefore, people are encouraged to donate canned goods or non-perishable food items like cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, rice and more.

The Town of Brownsburg said its Let’s Give Food Drive collected around 8,700 items last year.

The food pantry hopes to collect 10,000 items this year.

People can drop off donations at Messiah Lutheran Church or at Brownsburg Town Hall during normal business hours.

“November and December are definitely months where we see more activity here in the pantry,” said manager Judy Phillips. “People need the food to help them celebrate the holidays, get through when they have more expenses in their lives. Maybe they’re buying gifts, maybe they have heating bills in those kind of things.“

President of Brownsburg Town Council Travis Tschaenn told News 8, “I think everyone realizes that there’s a lot of people in hard times not just because of the economy bouncing back, but I think it’s a tough time in general for a lot of families. Anything we can do to help out or more than happy to.”

The community is also coming together to renovate a popular playground called Blast Off in Hendricks County.

Volunteers are helping to replace play features, posts and hardware.

Blast Off is in phase one of renovations and is expected to be completed by the end of summer in 2022.

Brownsburg Parks is currently raising money to prepare for phase two of the project.
