Washington Continentals mark 50th anniversary of state final basketball win

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Fifty years ago, the Washington High School basketball team capped off an undefeated season with a state championship.

It was the school’s second state final win.

The team and its fans celebrated on Friday night at Workingman’s friend tavern in indianapolis.

Steve downing played in that 1969 game and said it was a dream come true. 

“It was a special time. At that time, basketball and athletics was all people had to do. All our teammates grew up right here in indianapolis. That team was something special.”

The 1969 Washington Continentals team was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
