Where to buy local food in the middle of Indiana winter

Indy Winter Farmers Market

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – On Saturday at 6 in the morning, the Circle City Industrial Complex was quiet and empty. By 8 a.m. 75 local farmers and vendors were setting up stalls filled with fresh produce at Indy’s longest running winter farmers market.

Their mission — to show Indianapolis how to eat local and healthy in the middle of Indiana winter.

“Most people think you can’t grow certain types of vegetables in winter, but a lot of the farmers here use technology to make it possible,” said Victoria Beaty with Growing Places Indy.

The market doesn’t stop at local fresh produce. Visitors can grab ready-to-eat warm meals or take a by-donation yoga class. There is also a kid’s area with giant games and stuffed animals.

Beaty says the market’s vegan cheese stand is one of the most popular, but by the time doors opened at 9 a.m., visitors were bustling through the aisles sampling, buying and learning all about local eating.

The Indy Winter Farmers Market is open now through the end of April.

Hours are Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
