Residents in Zionsville allowed to return to homes, businesses after gas leak led to evacuation

UPDATE: A gas leak in Zionsville has been repaired and people are allowed back in their homes and businesses after a brief evacuation on Friday.

The city says the gas company is working with residents to check individual properties prior to re-entry.

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Several homes and businesses have been evacuated in Zionsville after a gas main leak Friday.

According to Boone County Sheriff’s Office, homes and businesses in the area of 1600 West Oak Street were being evacuated. The Zionsville Fire Department said the leak was a 6-inch rupture in front of 1630 W Oak St.

A day care center was one of the businesses to be evacuated. Children from the day care were taken to they city’s town hall to be reunited with their families.

Crews are expected to be working to repair the leak for “the next few hours.”

According to the city, crews from Calumet were working in the area when they struck a large gas line under the roadway.

Residents are asked to avoid the area.
