Major downtown interstate bridges to close in May

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Department of Transportation (INDOT) is planning to close down two busy interstate bridges for the summer.

INDOT has revealed a project that will close down and refurbish two 40-year-old bridges at Interstates 65 and 70 starting on or after May 26, 2015.

Northbound I-65 ramp to westbound I-70 will be closed to allow contractors to update the two bridges to new safety standards. The refurbishment includes rebuilding bridge decks, replacing existing pin joints with redundant splices and rebuilding bridge supports.

All traffic travelling northbound on I-65 to westbound I-70 will be detoured to I-465. The interstate ramp will be closed in an effort to accelerate and expedite the project.

I-65 and I-70 traffic should expect single-lane restrictions at nights and on weekends.

INDOT plans to finish the project and open traffic flow back up on these bridges before the end of July.
