Major retailers announce holiday hiring

Holiday shopping is right around the corner and companies are getting prepared by announcing thousands of seasonal job opportunities.

Wal-Mart says it will hire 60,000 seasonal employees this year which is the same as last year. The retailer says it will have more workers and managers in stores and more registers open during peak hours this holiday season. Wal-mart says over half of the seasonal employees hired last year stayed with the company.

Toys R Us will start the holiday hiring process this month. The company says it will not hire as many seasonal workers as it did last year, but will give employees a chance to work more hours. The retailer plans to hire 40,000 holiday workers around the country. That is down from 45,000 hired last season.

Thursday UPS also announced its holiday hiring plans. It plans to hire 90,000 to 95,000 seasonal employees which is about the same as last year to support the heavy volume of holiday packages.

The company says it usually sees that heavy traffic from November and continue through January.

Kohl’s and Fed Ex have also announced they’re seasonal hiring processes are getting underway.

An early forecast from ShopperTrak says that holiday sales will rise 2.4 percent this year.
