Major road work begins around Indy Tuesday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – With the unofficial start to summer in the books, INDOT says road construction will really pick up starting Tuesday. Several projects are set to begin, the biggest being downtown in the South Split.

At midnight on Tuesday, INDOT will close the ramp from Interstate 65 north to Interstate 70 west. If you live on the south side and you work downtown, this will affect you starting Wednesday morning.

For about two months, the northbound ramp from I-65 onto I-70 westbound will be closed for construction. INDOT says it will be working to fix the Morris and Prospect street bridges that are decades old. INDOT also says to get around this, take the Meridian Street or West Street exits. Drivers can also get off on Raymond Street or Morris and Prospect.

This isn’t the only major project for INDOT this summer. Work also continues in Hamilton County. Two major projects on US 31 begin this week – one in Westfield near State Road 32 and another in Carmel between Interstate 465 and 116th Street. Traffic will be in single lanes as the work goes on.

Nathan Riggs from INDOT says this is another step in the years-long process to improving US 31 from Indianapolis to South Bend.

“We want to take care of the infrastructure that we have, maintaining and repairing what we have in place, but we’re also planning for the future,” said Riggs. “US 31 in Hamilton County, for instance, it’s congested. That hampers safety and mobility. So we’re planning for the future and getting rid of the traffic signals and upgrading it to a freeway to get people where they need to go more quickly and more safely.”

The state asks as always to slow down and watch out for crews as you drive through construction zones.
