Man charged with murder in September 2018 shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man has been charged with murder in connection to a September shooting in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Friday announced that Keith Smith, 36, had been charged with murder in the Sept. 29, 2018, death of 40-year-old Arnell Davis. Smith was already in police custody on an unrelated case, IMPD said.

Davis’s death was the third of three fatal shootings on Sept. 29, 2018.

IMPD officers were near the intersection of West 38th Street and North High School Road when they heard shots fired. An unidentified vehicle pulled up alongside a white Chevy Suburban and shot into it, killing a man later identified as Davis.

A few minutes later, investigators said they heard about six more shots fired in the parking lot of a nearby shopping mall near Dollar General. A large crowd of people gathered near the scene, and police had to ask people to avoid driving near the intersection. Additional emergency responders were called out for crowd control.

Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 5.
