Man dies after farm accident

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – An 82-year-old man is dead after an accident Tuesday on his farm involving a pick-up truck.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Department responded to Robert Legan’s farm on the 5000 block of North Talley Road Tuesday, after an accident occurred while attempting to lower the tailgate of Legan’s pick-up truck.

According to 24-Hour News 8’s partner paper The Columbus Republic, Legan was standing next to the truck while it was being moved away from a pole barn structure.

A 14-year-old was reportedly assisting Legan on Tuesday. The juvenile reportedly started the vehicle with the truck’s manual shift in reverse, causing the truck to back up and strike Legan, police say.

The 82-year-old was still conscious as police arrived, but passed away during his transportation by ambulance to the hospital, according to the Sheriff Department.

According to the Bartholomew County Coroner, Larry Fisher, Legan died from internal injuries.

The 14-year-old was also transported to the hospital, but police have not released a condition report for the juvenile.

Police are investigating the accident.
