Man killed, woman critical in Shelby Co. crash

SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – One man was killed and a woman is in critical condition following a multi-vehicle accident in Shelby County Tuesday afternoon according to Indiana State Police.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at U.S. 52 and North County Road 200 East and, just west of Morristown.

According to ISP, 51-year-old John Hogue was pronounced dead on scene by emergency crews.  A female, 30-year-old Jessica Maxwell was in very critical condition.

Maxwell was taken by medical helicopter to the hospital.

Police said their preliminary investigation has revealed that a grey 2105 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Hogue was stopped on U.S. 52 preparing to turn north onto Country Road 200 East when his vehicle was struck from the rear by a Freightliner utility truck.

The collision sent the Traverse into the westbound lanes, when it was hit by a 2011 Ford van driven by Maxwell.

Police said it’s believed that Hogue was thrown into the cargo area of his SUV and that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck.

The fatal incident remains under police investigation.
