Flu season’s first death of Indiana child 4 or younger reported

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — State health officials say four new deaths related to the flu have been reported this week, bringing the total number to 54 for the season.

The state’s first death of a child age 4 or younger was reported this week, according to Indiana State Department of Health. Also this week, five outbreaks at schools and 12 outbreaks at long-term care facilities were reported. Flu activity was described as “high” in the latest report.

Eleven of this season’s deaths happened in Marion County. Five were in Lake County in northwest Indiana.

Indiana had recorded 31 flu deaths last season by Feb. 15, 2019. In the 2018-2019 season, Indiana flu deaths totaled 113, including 16 in Marion County, according to ISDH.
