Monday’s business headlines

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Jane King is in with Monday’s business headlines, including a push for lawmakers to do more to stop telemarketing calls.

Stopping telemarketers

Unsolicited calls are a target in Indiana and now legislators are trying to stop them.

Lawmakers say 4,000 complaints about unsolicited calls were filed with the state’s attorney general’s office so far this year.

The calls are pushing credit solutions, phony health or life insurance and computer updates among other things.

Even Hoosiers on the “do not call” list are often getting these calls.

Time sold

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is buying Time Magazine for $190 million from Meredith.

He and his wife will hold Time as a family investment.

Benioff will not operate Time magazine but rather leave that to Time’s editor and chief.

Chinese tariffs

$200 billion of more tariffs could be imposed on China this week.

The Washington Post says the new tariffs would apply to more than 1,000 products, including refrigerators, air conditioners, furniture, televisions and toys.

These penalties could drive up the cost of a range of products ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Florence’s economic impact

Big storms, like Hurricane Florence, have a mixed impact on the economy.

Studies show business slows during and after hurricane, but rebuilding causes a boost in economic activity.

Studies have shown that a few years after a big storm, income and employment have recovered.

Stock market update

Stocks were higher Friday but not by much.

Smaller companies did well but threats of more tariffs against China kept some players on the sidelines.
