Mother thinks her ex-boyfriend shot her daughter

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A teenage girl was shot while she was sleeping early Saturday morning. The suspect is still at large.

It happened around 4:30 at the Camel Creek Apartments near 37th Street and North High School Road on the city’s north west-side.

According to police, the girl’s mom told investigators that her ex-boyfriend shot her daughter.

Sound asleep in her bedroom is where the 13-year-old victim was, when police say somebody pulled out a gun and fired into her window.

“I’m really shocked to hear that. It devastates me a little bit. I can’t believe something like that would happen here,” said Erika Lopez, who lives in the complex.

The shot was so loud that it woke Lopez, who was at home with her husband and 5-month-old son.

“We freaked out. I have a baby, you know,” said Lopez. “We look out the window to see what was going on and we didn’t see nothing. Then 10 minutes later, we saw police everywhere.”

The girl was hit in the thigh. She was conscious and alert when she was rushed to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Meanwhile, the suspect was no where to be found.

“That’s really surprising. That’s kind of scary. I’ve lived here for two years,” said Chad Faulkner.

Lopez added, “I hope they catch him soon. That’s all I got to say is, I hope they catch him soon cause we have a lot of kids here. It’s not just me who has a baby. It’s everyone.”

The teen’s mom believes it was her ex who shot into her daughter’s bedroom then took off. At this time, police have not made any arrests or determined a motive. With unanswered questions, neighbors are now questioning the safety of their community.

“I’d rather live someplace more nice, like the north-side. There’s a lot of shootings going on the west-side and east-side,” said Faulkner.

“I just hope that cops catch him soon. Because justice needs to be served for that little girl,” said Lopez.

Police say the girl’s mom told investigators that her ex may have driven to Hammond in a Chevy Equinox. Police aren’t releasing his name at this time, because they have not charged anyone in connection to the shooting.

The girl was treated and released from the hospital.
