Workshop aims to improve workplace diversity

Workplace Diversity Workshop

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Luna Language Services partnered Wednesday for a workplace diversity workshop.

Experts said the first step in removing barriers in the workplace is to recognize they exist. They are not always obvious to everyone.

Some people tend to equate workplace discrimination with ethnic backgrounds. But, experts said, discrimination at work impacts minorities, women, people with disabilities, older people, and people who speak a different language. In Indianapolis, about 14% of the population speaks a language other than English in their homes.

Luna and the commission are working with employers to help overcome barriers and provide people with opportunities to enter the workforce. Another work barrier maybe not thought about often is transportation barriers.

Tiffany Hanson with Luna Language Services said discrimination is “not just (in) Indianapolis. It’s everywhere across the country, but I think that discrimination, whether it’s very forward or very micro, is pretty prevalent everywhere.”
