Black Chamber of Commerce groups partnering to create Indiana collaboration

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A new statewide collaboration aims to improve the odds for Black-owned businesses by bringing together Black Chamber of Commerce groups around the state.

Even in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce saw its membership grow by 40%. They said many businesses are learning that they can survive if they shift their game plan, and being able to collaborate and reel in resources from around the state can only help.

More than 20 years ago, Anita and Ellis Woolridge developed a business: Impact Specialties and Promotions. Despite challenges, it’s still here today and thriving despite the pandemic.

The pair specialize in promotional products, and adapting has been key to staying afloat. Instead of just personalized, pens, bags cups and more, they’ve created promotional personal protection equipment for businesses, such as masks and face shields.

Being willing to reshape one’s game plan has been paramount for businesses surviving the pandemic. And with more eyes on Black-owned business, Indy Black Chamber of Commerce President Anita Williams said it’s time to latch onto that.

“After about five years, we know that 50% of businesses fail. So we want to be there to change that outlook — to change that paradigm,” Williams said.

The Indy Black Chamber of Commerce is one of many others that’ll make up The Greater Indiana Black Chamber of Commerce. It’ll support business in places like Indianapolis, Muncie, Anderson and Evansville.

Collective economics always works, Williams said, and she’s excited to see what pulling together resources does.

“They really have a heart for Black businesses and wanting them to succeed,” said Woolridge.

The official launch for The Greater Indiana Black Chamber of Commerce is Saturday.
