NASCAR to introduce larger rear spoiler at Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — NASCAR is making some on-track changes that could improve racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of the Brickyard 400 later this month.

After a few years with little passing, anything would help.

The need for passing is critical. Last year there were only 16 lead exchanges among nine drivers.

Only a few were made under green-flag competition, otherwise it was follow the leader.

NASCAR will introduce a larger rear spoiler in the July 26 race.

The 9-inch spoiler and a 1-inch wicker bill should create a more drafting effect.

Passing opportunities should happen on a more frequent basis under those conditions.

Jeff Gordon, who tested at IMS in April says “it’s obvious to all of us that that’s one of the hardest places we have to pass, but the magic is there to pass if the aero package changes.”

It appears someone was listening.
