Father makes son hold ‘I’m a bully’ sign as punishment for bullying

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) — A man in Florida said he wanted to teach his son a lesson about bullying when he made the teen hold a sign saying “I’m a bully” near a busy intersection.

“I figured I would teach him a lesson that would embarrass him and make him feel how the kids feel,” Michael Yager told WESH.

Yager said he was outraged after learning his son, Jacob, bullied multiple classmates at New Smyrna Beach Middle School.

Wanting to teach his 13-year-old son a lesson, the frustrated father drove his son to nearby State Road 442 and parked on a busy corner and gave him a sign that said, “I’m a bully, honk if you hate bullies.”

Jacob said it didn’t take long for people to start honking. Some even stopped to speak with both father and son.

Michael said he received a good response from the neighborhood but acknowledged not everyone agreed with his parenting.

“I had one woman come up and call me every name in the book,” Yager said. “In my mind I thought I was doing the right thing, but I guess you just can’t please everyone.”

A recent statistic shows one out of every five students report being bullied.

Jacob said he’s learned an invaluable lesson and now plans to help his classmates.

“You never know what someone can be going through. If you want to be the bully, like if you have something inside you need to tell someone go to a guidance counselor or someone,” Jacob said.
