Neighbors say New Castle shooting victim was trying to turn his life around

NEW CASTLE, Ind. (WISH) — Police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a 49-year-old New Castle man named Steven Dunn Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened in the 800 block of Vine Street around 5:00 a.m. at Dunn’s home. Mayor Greg York is asking the public to help police find the shooter.

“We feel like it was more of a domestic argument or a dispute,” York said. “We feel it was very isolated. Very direct. There was a reason why this happened. It wasn’t just a random shooting.”

Police spent more than six hours combing through Dunn’s home Tuesday. York said he could not remember the last time a murder happened in New Castle.

Neighbors said Dunn was a good guy who struggled with drugs and was trying to turn his life around. He appeared on WISH-TV in August of 2016 for an interview about conditions in the Henry County Jail.

Chris Baker said he first met Dunn when they were both locked up.

“I honestly hate to see that he’s gone like this,” Dunn said. “He was a guy that had problems but he was straightening his life out.”

Court records show Dunn entered a guilty plea to possession of methamphetamine last March.

But Amber Garner said she grew up with Dunn and he was a different man when sober.

“Whenever he wasn’t doing that stuff, he was a good guy,” Garner said. “He would get out and mow everybody’s yards. Three or four yards a day and do it weekly. He’d just help you out.”

Police said Dunn was transported to the hospital before he died. State police are also investigating.

If you have any information on the shooting, you are urged to call Captain Scott Ullery at 765-529-4890 Ext 3308, Captain Ed Manning at 765-529-4890 Ext 4413, or Detective Andy Byers at 765-778-2121.
