NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Noblesville police have detained a 15-year-old boy in connection to a threat against Noblesville High School that involved derogatory racial statement and referenced a school shooting.

Noblesville police Lt. Bruce Barnes said the threat was found in a bathroom stall at the high school while students were at school. The police department was made aware of the threat around 11 a.m. Friday.

The police department said the suspect in connection to the threatening message, a 15-year-old male Noblesville High School student, was quickly identified and detained as a result of the collaborative effort of school officials and police.

A Friday afternoon statement from Marnie Cooke, the Noblesville Schools director of marketing and communications, said the threat “involved ugly, derogatory racial statements and referenced a school shooting this coming Monday” and that police were investigating and questioning a suspect in the incident:

The NHS threat involved ugly, derogatory racial statements and referenced a school shooting this coming Monday.

Police are currently onsite investigating and questioning a suspect. We will have increased police presence for tonight’s events at NHS.

We are sickened that we are facing this situation once again and will aggressively address hatred and threats to the safety of our students and community.

We’ll continue to provide our parents updates and plan for school Monday.

A Friday night statement from Cooke said the detained suspect had been removed from the school and expulsion proceedings had begun. A message from Superintendent Beth Niedermeyer said the community was welcome at a Saturday meeting “for an important conversation about ensuring all our students and staff feel safe, respected and included in our community.” Full statement from the school district and superintendent:

The NHS threat suspect has been detained by the police. He has been removed from the school and we have begun expulsion proceedings.

NHS will be in session Monday with increased police presence and weekend activities will continue as scheduled.

We also want to clarify for parents that police began investigating the threat in question immediately and extra safety precautions were taken. Since it did not convey an immediate threat we followed police protocol before notifying parents.

The following message is from Superintendent Dr. Beth Niedermeyer:

‘The cruelty, hatred and ugliness that we’ve seen in our community is heartbreaking and as a school district and community we are better than this. We must stand together against violence and racism. We have engaged our Noblesville Diversity Coalition (NDC) and NHS student leaders to join us tomorrow for an important conversation about ensuring all our students and staff feel safe, respected and included in our community. Community members are invited to attend this conversation Saturday November 17 from 3-4:30PM at Ivy Tech in Noblesville. The event will be a time to share and listen to one another, think about ways we can stand together to show our love and support of all people and discuss ways we can help to unify our community. Noblesville Schools counselors will also available at the event for those who need support.”’
