Numerous construction projects planned at Indiana University
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Work is almost complete on the $53 million School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University and it’s just one of more than a dozen construction projects on the school’s docket.
The building will house the new school, along with dozens of departments in foreign language, social studies and humanities. After two years of work on the $53 million project, construction is expected to wrap up Friday, with crews moving furniture into the building Monday.
The School of Global and International Studies, which opens this fall to students and faculty, features walls covered in whiteboard-like material and a staircase wall made up of stones from 14 different countries.
“I think these, all said and done, will be some of the nicest classrooms on campus,” said Tom Williams, the school’s director of construction administration.
Additional projects include renovations to Assembly Hall, the Kelley School of Business and a residence hall, as well as a groundbreaking on a new medical school in downtown Evansville this fall.
Indiana University, University of Southern Indiana and University of Evansville are partnering on the medical school, which is scheduled to open by the end of 2017. The building will be about 150,000 square feet and will feature classrooms, an amphitheater and a simulation center.
The two public institutions, Indiana University and University of Southern Indiana, plan to request $25.2 million in construction funding for the medical school in the new state budget beginning July 1.
Indiana University also is constructing buildings for the School of Informatics and Computing and the School of Public Environmental Affairs, adding one story to the Musical Arts Center, and rebuilding a portion of Woodlawn Avenue.
