NWS confirms 2 tornadoes touched down in Jennings County

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three houses were damaged in Jennings County after a tornado moved through the area Thursday night. 

The National Weather Service confirmed Friday the damages sustained Thursday night were caused by a tornado.

The National Weather Service said the homes were reportedly damaged near Vernon around 7:30 p.m. No injuries were reported, the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office.

A second tornado also touced down in far northeast Jennings County. That tornado has been preliminarily rated as an EF1. 

Also, several downed trees in Decatur County shared on social media may be from tornado damage as well, the National Weather Service said.  Several trees were down east of the rural community of Millhousen, about 40 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Radar indicated a storm with rotation moved through the area shortly after 7:55 p.m. There was no word of any injuries. 

About 2 miles north of Millhousen, a social media report showed a wooden playset destroyed. The storm moved through that area about 8 p.m.

The weather service also said trees were downed by a possible tornado near the Decatur County community of New Point. The trees were down near County Road 400 South and U.S. 421.

In Rush County, a possible tornado about 9:15 p.m. downed trees and utility poles around 300 West County Road 600 North. That’s about halfway between Rushville and Carthage.

Decatur, Fayette, Henry, Jennings, Randolph, Rush and Wayne counties in the WISH-TV viewing area were briefly under tornado warnings as storms moved through.

Outside the WISH-TV viewing area, law enforcment told the weather service that a house was destroyed in Ripley County at County Road 700 South and Lemon Road. On West County Road 800 South, a large tree and power poles were downed. That damage occurred about 7:50 p.m.
